A farmer killed himself in broad daylight
yesterday. We all know that these are
terrible times of depravity, cheap politics
and all round Kalyug but some how a man
committing suicide at a public event just
makes one shudder at the circumstances
that might have led to such an extreme act.
India has historically been an agrarian
economy with millions of farmers toiling
hard to feed our ever-increasing numbers.
Clearly we have not been taking good care
of the hands that feed us if they are getting
forced to kill themselves from Andhra to
Maharashtra and now Rajasthan/Delhi.
Logically this should take us to a discussion
on the increasing economic disparity in
modern India with the rich being rich
enough to drive Audis that cost in crores
while the poor can barely survive. Of how
we have about a hundred odd dollar
billionaires while hundreds of millions of
Indians live in extreme poverty.
But for now I would like to look at what
happened while the suicide drama was
being played out in the midst of an AAP
rally.
AAP: The party with a difference. The
party that was supposed to be our big new
hope. The party that was supposed to stand
for the aam aadmi. The party that was
holding a rally ostensibly in support for
farmers but couldn’t bother to stop when a
farmer killed himself.
The critics are saying that the AAP leaders
should have stopped the rally and tried to
help, but they didn’t. Leader after leader
kept speaking while the poor man climbed
up the tree and hung himself. They did
express disgust at the inept Delhi Police for
not doing anything, because of course, it is
under Center’s control. After all, humanity
can take a hike when Kejriwal ji can use the
occasion to prove that the Delhi Police is
useless because he doesn’t control it.
Because that’s what politicians do.
Trust politicians to make a circus of human
life.
The poor man’s death was soon
converted into a fertile zone for
mudslinging at opponents. AAP leader
Somnath Bharti very cleverly hinted at the
death being an opposition conspiracy,
thereby proving that AAP has picked up the
nuances of politics perfectly. Poor Gajendra
Singh must have been a BJP agent out to
malign Kejriwal by killing himself. For this
supreme sacrifice, his paymasters better
create a nice memorial for him. BJP and
Congress of course blamed AAP for not
bothering to stop their rally after the
unfortunate incident.
Later revelations have confounded the
matter. There are reports of Gajendra being
an affluent farmer and a small-time
celebrity, having tied turbans to some
famous people including Clinton and
Vajpayee. Perhaps this rules out his being a
poor farmer; perhaps this doesn’t. He
reportedly had political ambitions and had
stood in multiple elections, and was leaning
towards AAP now. Perhaps his suicide
attempt was to be a publicity stunt which
went woefully wrong. Perhaps he had
hoped to get on Kejriwal’s good side by
showing that he could match him in stunt
capabilities. Unfortunately we will never
know.
At the end of the day, a life was lost. If this
was a stunt, then it was clearly not very
well thought out and only shows that
politics in our country can stoop to any
level. If it wasn’t, then it’s about time we
took some measures to help our farmers.
Of course, as things go with Indian politics,
the reason why a farmer got forced to take
his life will be the last thing we discuss.
Let’s focus on knee-jerk reactions and using
this story to humiliate our opponents. Much
more fun that way.
